SCC Returns to Action with a Solid Road Victory over RCC

The Santiago Canyon College Men's Basketball Team last played on December 17th and were finally able to get back on the court tonight at Riverside City College. The Hawks are currently ranked 4th in the state and were eager to get back on the court. SCC came back from an 8-point halftime deficit to defeat RCC by the score of 89-79. The Hawks and Tigers battled throughout the first half and saw six lead changes in the first 10 minutes. RCC went on a run and built a 10-point lead with a minute to go in the half. The Hawks scored to cut the deficit to 8 leading into halftime. Both teams shook off some rust in the opening half. SCC was led in scoring in the half by Preston Sims with 12 points. Josh Griffin had 8 points, while David Agba grabbed 5 rebounds. The Hawks were rusty in the first half with some uncharacteristic turnovers that led to transition points for Riverside City. RCC led at the half 40-32.
SCC came out strong in the second half and cut into RCC's lead early. By the 15-minute mark, the score was tied and SCC was starting to pick up steam. Drew Yezbak and Erik Howlin connected on two 3-pointers each and Aaron Wadman was 6 for 7 from the field to spark the team and build an 11-point lead with 1-minute remaining. The three standout freshmen have been major contributors for the team throughout the season. Six players scored in double figures for the Hawks. Leading the way was Wadman with 18, Agba with 17, and Sims with 16. Rounding out the double-digit scorers were Yezbak with 14, Josh Griffin with 12, and Howlin with 10. Agba also led all players in the game with 12 rebounds. SCC connected on 9 of their 23 three-point attempts. Santiago Canyon is now 13-1 on the season and 3-0 in the Orange Empire Conference. The Hawks return to action at home on Wednesday, January 19th as they host Santa Ana College. Tip-off is set for 6pm.
