The Santiago Canyon College men's soccer team hit the road for its season opener on Friday night to face off against the East Lost Angeles Huskies in non-conference action. Three goals from the Hawks was, unfortunately, not enough as they succumbed to a 5-3 loss.
The Huskies struck first as they buried the opening goal in just six minutes of action. However, the Hawks held them at bay for the remainder of the first half with freshman goalkeeper Juan Pablo Alvarez recording four saves.
The Hawks drew a foul in the box and were able to notch their first goal of the season on a penalty kick from freshman midfielder Andrew Marentes to not the score up at one all heading into halftime.
The Huskies wasted no time getting back into the scoring rythmn in the final 45 minutes by netting another score in the 50th minute. Neverthless, the Hawks answered three minutes later as freshman forward Diego Rivera located the back of the net to bring the contest to two all.
Marentes continued to be a pest in the box and draw yet another pentaly kick in the 60th minute to hand the Hawks a 3-2 advantage. However, East LA went on to score three unanswered goals leading to a 5-3 loss.
Marentes led the team with two scores coming via penalty kicks, while Rivera buried one score. Marentes led with three shots, two coming on goal, while sophomore forward Jorge Garcia Cruz followed with two attempts.
Alvarez (0-1) was tabbed with the loss after hauling in five saves on 10 opportunities.
