Hawks Headed to the State Championship
The Santiago Canyon College Softball Team defeated #2 Cerritos College on Friday and Saturday in the Super Regional. On Friday, the Hawks put up a commanding 8-0 win in 6 innings of work to take game 1. With the series being a best of 3 games, the Hawks needed one win on Saturday in order to punch their ticket to the Elite-8 State Championship Tournament. SCC however, found themselves down 3-0 before coming back to win the game 4-3 in 8-innings.
In the 6th inning, the Hawks were able to push one run across to close the gap and bring the score to 3-1. With one out in the top of the 7th, the Hawks began to rally. Riley Piattoni doubled to left-center. Samantha Villanueva followed with a single to right field that moved Piattoni to third. Lili Navarro then delivered a game tying 2 RBI double in the left center gap bringing the game to a 3-3 tie before the Falcons were able to end the scoring threat.
The Falcons threated in the bottom of the 6th with 3 consecutive singles to load the bases with just one out. Exceptional defense from the Hawks third baseman Alyssa Yslas kept the Hawks alive as she snagged a scorching line drive in the 5/6 hole. Winning pitcher, Stella Turner, then induced a fly ball to work out of the jam.
SCC pushed the eventual winning run across in the top of the 8th inning. Lindsey Marschall led off with walk and advanced to second on a bunt from Adriana Martinez. A ground ball allowed Marschall to move to third base setting up the game-winning, RBI single from Riley Piattoni. The Hawks were able to hold off the Cerritos offense for the final 3 outs of the game and secure their berth to the CCCAA State Championship.
The State Championship is held at Bakersfield College from May 18 through May 22nd. The Hawks were last in the tournament 3 seasons ago and won the State Championship title during the 2016 season.
