Hawks Battle But Drop Game One
The Hawks dropped game one of the CCCAA State Championship to #1 seeded College of San Mateo. In a dramatic comeback attempt, the Hawks took the 11-10 loss and will now face Sierra College at 11am on Friday. With a loss, the Hawks will now have to battle through the bracket and win 6 straight games to bring home the State Championship Title.
SCC took an early aggressive 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning but saw College of San Mateo quickly respond with 4 runs in the bottom half of the frame. The Hawks were able to add 2 more runs in the 4th inning with a 2 RBI double from Samantha Villanueva. A controversial call at the plate stifled another potential run for the Hawks that inning with Adriana Martinez attempting to score on a fielder's choice.
The Bulldogs offense continued to put pressure on the Hawks defense and by the bottom of the 5th, the Hawks were trailing by 5 runs. In the top of the 6th however, SCC responded in a big way throwing up 5 runs and tying the game up 10-10. With two outs and a runner on base, Lili Navarro drove a 2-run homerun to dead center. An error and a walk put runners on first and second. The Hawks continued to rally with three consecutive singles from Alexandra Molina, Lindsey Marschall, and Adriana Martinez to tie up the score heading into the final inning. A bulldog homerun in the bottom of the frame however gave San Mateo the go ahead run to seal the game 11-10.
In 2016, the Hawks saw themselves in the same position and pulled off the feat that hadn't been done for 20 years. Dropping game one, the team rallied to come back through the loser's bracket and win the State Championship title. The Hawks are looking to repeat history with the first game of the day against Sierra College at 11am. A win will have them playing again at 5:00pm.
