Seven Different Scorers Lead Hawks Past Dons
Seven different Hawks found the back of the net on Friday afternoon as the No. 9 Santiago Canyon College women's soccer team hosted the Santa Ana College Dons in their second Orange Empire Conference (OEC) meeting of the season.
It was all Hawks from the jump as they punched through their first goal in the 10th minute with freshman forward Samantha Aguila granting her team a one-score lead. Shortly after, sophomore forward Sheila Sanchez linked up with freshman forward Kristen Smick in the 13th minute for a goal leading to a 2-0 lead before the 15-minute mark.
Santiago Canyon continued to press down on the gas pedal as freshman forward Rayleen Chairez hammered home a score in the 39th minute with an assist from freshman midfielder Jacqueline Arroyo. Just two minutes later, freshman forward Alyssa Marino checked into the contest and joined the potent scoring brigade with Chairez finding her for a netter to cart a 4-0 lead into halftime.
SCC went on to match their first-half scoring mark in the ensuing 45 minutes of play by poking through four more goals. Freshman forward Madelynn Valdez scored not one, but two goals in the matter of two minutes. The first was assisted by freshman forward Sloane De Torres, while the second one was compliments of a header from sophomore defender Kiera Hanna off a set piece.
Freshman midfielder Madison Stottlemyer chipped in a goal in the 60th minute on a beautiful pass from freshman defender Christina Benavides, backed by the eighth and final goal off the left foot of freshman defender Brisa Mariscal just outside of the box. Freshman forward Giovanna Diaz assisted on the final score leading to an 8-0 win.
Valdez scored her first two goals of her career, while Stottlemyer and Mariscal tallied their first scores of the season as well. Marino and Smick scored a goal each and currently share the team lead with eight goals each. Chairez's score puts her second on the team in scoring with seven goals.
Sophomore goalkeeping duo Brittany Hazelton (1-0-0) and Krystal Maxey split time between the posts with Hazelton earning the start and her first win of the season. Neither of the two had an opportunity for a save.
The Hawks fired off 32 shots with 21 of them landing on frame. Smick led the team with five shots, while Chairez and Stottlemyer each unleashed four times.
