SCC Starts Conference Play with a Win
The #3 ranked Hawks from Santiago Canyon College opened their 2019-20 Orange Empire Conference Campaign with a convincing win over Orange Coast College.
The #3 ranked Hawks from Santiago Canyon College opened up their 2019-20 Orange Empire Conference campaign with a convincing win over Orange Coast College. The final score was 116-48. With the win, SCC is now 13-0 on the season and 1-0 in conference. OCC drops to 2-9 on the season and 0-1 in the OEC. The Hawks used their three-point shooting once again to get them a solid lead early in the game. Four out of their first five baskets were from beyond the arc. The Hawks finished the first half with 12 made three-pointers on 20 attempts, as they led 62-29. Three players scored in double digits in the first half. A.J. Garrity scored 15 points with 3 made three-pointers, Lucas Holden finished the half with 14 points and 2 three-pointers, and David Agba contributed 13 points including 3 three-pointers.
The 2nd half was much of the same as the Hawks continued to build their lead over the Pirates. SCC poured in 7 more three-point field goals in the half to finish with 19 made three-pointers for the game. The Hawks had 8 players finish with double digits in the scoring column. Garrity and Holden led the way with 18 points apiece. Agba scored 17 points, while Paulo Araujo and Brandon Green both finished with 12 points. Paul Vilela and Troy Kihm chipped in with 11 points each, and Randall Walker finished the game with 10 points. Walker had a solid all around game by adding 7 rebounds and 6 assists. The Hawks defense stepped up as well as they held OCC to 19 points in the second half on 24.1% shooting. SCC finished the game shooting 56.3% from the floor including 50% from the 3-point line.
In the last 2 games, the Hawks have connected on 40 three-point shots and have scored 248 points, while holding their opponents to a combined 121 points. On Friday, the Hawks will travel to Cypress College for their 2nd Orange Empire Conference game. Tip-off is set for 5:00pm.
