SCC has a Setback at Home

Santiago Canyon has had few setbacks this season despite battling some injuries and managing through Covid issues. On Monday, they unfortunately had one and fell to Saddleback by the score of 79-68. The Hawks couldn't manage to get in a rhythm on offense and seemed a step behind all game. The Bobcats jumped out early with an opening possession three-pointer and never relinquished the lead. They built an 11-point lead in the first half, but the Hawks battled back and cut the lead to 1 with about 5 minutes to go in the half. Saddleback answered with a pair of three-pointers and were able to build a 12-point lead at the half. SCC was led in scoring in the first half by Preston Sims with 13 points and Drew Yezbak with 11 points.
The second half was a back and forth affair, but the Hawks couldn't manage to get over the hump. Saddleback maintained a single digit lead for the half and secured the win by the score of 79-68. It was the second lowest scoring output of the season for the Hawks. Sims led the way in scoring with 23 points and also had a team-high 7 rebounds. Yezbak was the only other double digit scorer with 16 points including three from distance. The two shot a combined 13 for 22 from the floor, including 8 for 14 from three, while the rest of the team only managed 10 for 34 from the floor and 1 for 13 from the three-point line.
SCC continues its conference schedule as they play at Fullerton on Wednesday, 2/9 at 5pm. Fullerton is ranked #2 in the state, while SCC is ranked 5th. It should prove to be an exciting game as 2 of the top 5 teams in the state battle in the Orange Empire Conference. SCC is now 17-3 on the season and 7-2 in conference play.
