The Santiago Canyon College men's soccer team found themselves staring down the barrel of a two-score deficit entering the final stages of an Orange Empire Conference (OEC) contest against the Irvine Valley College Lasers on Tuesday afternoon. The Hawks went on to tie the contest with two late, second-half scores, but a questionable foul call outside of the box gave the Laser an opportunity to steal the win at the final score of 3-2.
After missing nine games due to injury, freshman forward Hudson Dare picked up right where he left off after entering the contest halfway through the second half. After freshman Jorge Garcia Cruz dished out a pinpoint pass on the far side of the goal, Dare corralled a shot with a one touch and hammered home a score with his right foot in the 73rd minute to trim the deficit to 2-1.
Just six minutes later, the Hawks drew a corner kick and capitalized on a set play. Freshman forward Diego Rivera fed a low ball just inside the box to Garcia Cruz's feet where he gently tapped the ball behind him to the streaking freshman forward Nick Asam resulting in the match-tying score.
As the game progressed into extra time, the Hawks committed a highly questionable foul just outside the box to award the Lasers a free kick. They were able to capatilize on the set piece by heading in a score as extra time expired.
All five goals were scored in the second half where all seven of the contest's yellow cards were issued as well. There was a total of 28 fouls in the game.
Freshman goalkeeper Juan Pablo Alvarez (2-6-3) was tabbed with the loss despite making some brilliant saves in the ladder half of the contest. He ended with five saves.
The Hawks fired off nine shots with six landing on target. Asam was the lone weapon to uncork more than one attempt as he led the team with two shots.
