Hawks Win Regional Championship
The Santiago Canyon College Softball Team defeated College of the Canyons in a 3-game series to win the CCCAA Regional and advance to the CCCAA Super Regional. The Hawks dropped an uncharacteristic game on Friday afternoon to open the series putting them in a situation to have to win 2 on Saturday to stay alive in the playoffs. SCC did just that with a commanding 8-0 mercy rule victory in game one of the day to even the series 1-1 and force a game three. In the final deciding game, the Hawks clinched the series with a 6-4 victory and punching their ticket to the Super Regional.
The Hawks offense collected 13 hits in the first game led by Liliana Navarro who went 3-for-4, with a double, a homerun, and 3 RBI. Riley Piattoni drove in 2 runs on 2 hits including a double. Jazmyn Moetului and Adriana Martinez also added 2 hits each. Stella Turner threw a complete game shutout, holding the Cougars offense to just 3 hits.
In the final game of the series, the Hawks saw themselves down 1-0 in the first inning before immediately responding with 2 runs to take the lead in the next half inning. The game would be tied up once again as Canyons added a run in the 3rd. The Hawks rallied for 4 runs in the 5th inning to put the game out of reach and take the eventual 6-4 victory. Stella Turner picked up her second win of the day, throwing a complete 7 innings to improve her overall record to 25-9. The Hawks offense put up 10 hits with Jade Costa (2 double, 2RBI), Lindsey Marschall (triple, RBI), and Adriana Martinez (2 doubles, RBI) each contributing 2 hits.
SCC will now travel to #2 Cerritos College for the CCCAA Super Regional for a "Best of Three" game series. Game #1 will take play on Friday at 2:00pm, Game #2 will be Saturday at 12:00pm, and the "if necessary" Game #3 would immediately follow. The winner of this series will advance to the State Championship Tournament held May 19-22 in Bakersfield, California.
