Softball Falls in Conference Opener
A quick start on the offensive end was not enough for the Santiago Canyon College softball team on Tuesday afternoon as they faced off against the Orange Coast College Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference (OEC) opener. The Hawks mustered two runs on five hits, but a powerful Pirates attack handed them a 7-2 defeat.
The Hawks scored the first run of the game in the top of the first inning sparked by a one-out single from sophomore left fielder Alyssa Patlan. She promptly swiped second base and came around to score on a single off the bat of sophomore catcher Raneem Kerdiya.
However, the Pirates bats struck in the first three innings as they accounted for all seven runs throughout that span. Another fifth inning run from the Hawks compliments of a sacrifice fly from Patlan was not enough leading to the defeat.
Freshman hurler Madison Lee (4-9) was tagged with the loss after tossing three innings and allowing seven runs, but only three being earned. Freshman reliever Nadeen Kerdiya came in and stopped the bleeding for the remainder of the game by chucking three scoreless innings and surrendering just one hit.
