SCC wins Second Tournament Championship with 89-86 Win
Santiago Canyon College came into tonight’s game fresh off an overtime victory the night before and battled on the road to come out with a victory over Citrus College in the host’s tournament championship game.
Santiago Canyon College came into tonight's game fresh off an overtime victory the night before and battled on the road to come out with a victory over Citrus College in the host's tournament championship game. The Hawks defeated the Owls by the score of 89-86. SCC is now 8-1 on the season and Citrus is 6-2.
Citrus jumped on Santiago Canyon early and opened up a quick 6-0 lead, but the Hawks answered back and went on a 8-2 run to tie the score at 8 apiece. From there, the first half seemed to favor the Hawks with a 6-8 point margin most of the half. The first half came to an end with SCC leading 32-26. Aaron Wadman paced the Hawks with 12 points including 2 three-pointers. David Agba added 7 points, while Preston Sims grabbed 7 rebounds in the half.
The second half was similar to the first half in that SCC maintained a single digit lead throughout most of the half. The Owls did manage to take a brief lead, but the Hawks answered right back and grew their lead to 11 points with 6:40 remaining in the game. SCC finished the game with solid execution and good team play to win 89-86. Once again, balanced scoring was the offensive attack. Leading the scoring attack were Agba (17 points), Sims (16 points), Wadman (14 points), Cameron Calcote (13 points), Erik Howlin (12 points), and Josh Griffin (11 points). Sims continued his strong play on the boards with 12 including 3 on the offensive end. Agba chipped in with 8 rebounds as well. SCC's bench has been a major contributor all season and scored 38 of the team's total points tonight. The Hawks are now 8-1 on the season and will play two games this coming week. They will travel to LA Harbor on Wednesday and return home to host Palomar on Friday. Both games will start at 5:00pm.
