Santiago Canyon Impressive in OEC Win over Cypress College
Santiago Canyon College hosted the Chargers of Cypress College in the second game of the Orange Empire Conference tonight and came away with an impressive 84-70 victory.
Santiago Canyon College hosted the Chargers of Cypress College in the second game of the Orange Empire Conference tonight and came away with an impressive 84-70 victory. The Hawks looked in rhythm offensively and had a terrific defensive effort. The game was close through the first ten minutes of the first half, before SCC surged ahead by 7 points. The team built a 12 point lead with 1:10 left in the first half and led 40-28 at the half. The Hawks were balanced once again in scoring with 7 players scoring in the half led by Harrison Wiese with 9 points. SCC's defense held Cypress to 10 of 30 shooting in the half.
The Hawks built their halftime lead in the second half to 14 points with about 10 minutes remaining in the game and continued their strong effort to finish the half. Their biggest lead of 19 points came with 4:57 left in the game. Balanced scoring is a trademark of this team and it was evident again tonight. Leading the way was David Agba with 15 points, Drew Yezbak with 14, Preston Sims and Wiese with 12 apiece. Cameron Calcote was a spark plug off the bench and added 11 points, while both Josh Griffin and Erik Howlin scored 9 points. Agba led all players with 10 rebounds, while Sims and Howlin both dished out 4 assists. SCC returns to action in a non-conference game on Thursday, December 30th at home against Cerritos College at 5pm. With the win tonight, the Hawks are 2-0 in conference play and have an overall record of 12-1. They currently are ranked 4th in the state according to the Massey Rating and are 6th in CCCMBCA Coaches' Poll.
