Hawks Fall to Fighting Cacti in Overtime on the Road
Santiago Canyon College took to the road again and traveled to Joshua Tree to play Copper Mountain College.
Santiago Canyon College took to the road again and traveled to Joshua Tree to play Copper Mountain College. SCC came in with a 4-1 record and a 4-game winning streak. Copper Mountain was 4-2 entering the game. The game was back and forth all night long with both teams going on runs at various points in each half. Regulation time wasn't enough for the two teams as the game went into Overtime. In overtime, Copper Mountain excelled and finished off the Hawks with a final score of 95-88. With the loss, the Hawks drop to 4-2 on the season.
SCC came out strong and built a 10-point lead in the first half only to see the Fighting Cacti respond with a 12-0 run of their own to take a 2-point advantage. The Hawks soared back and had a 6-point lead at intermission. SCC led by the score of 46-40 in a high scoring half. Both teams pushed pace on offense and were able to score in transition.
The Hawks started off strong in the second half as well as they took a 10-point lead. However, over the course of the next fifteen minutes Copper Mountain outscored SCC by 20 points to go up by 10 points with five minutes to play. Santiago Canyon bounced right back though and tied the game up with under a minute to play. With the ball and the score tied, Kai Smith hit a jumper in the lane to give SCC a 2-point lead. On the ensuing possession Copper Mountain scored a lay-up to tie the game with 20 seconds to play. As the clock wound down at the end of regulation, SCC was unable to get off a clean shot. In overtime, Copper Mountain outscored SCC 11-4 to secure the victory.
Leading the way in scoring for Santiago Canyon was Aaron Wadman and Zach Ibbetson who both scored 20 points. Also in double digits was Kai Smith with 13 points and Harrison Wiese with 10 points. Wadman led the team in rebounds with 8 and in assists with 7. The Hawks only shot 28.6% from the 3-point line and 68.8% from the Free Throw Line which led to their demise. SCC will be back in action on the road on Wednesday, November 23 at Mt. San Antonio College. Tip-off is set for 5pm.
