SCC Secures Win over Riverside City
Santiago Canyon College came into tonight’s action fresh off a sizzling performance in their 81-76 victory over Saddleback College on Tuesday night.
Santiago Canyon College came into tonight's action fresh off a sizzling performance in their 81-76 victory over Saddleback College on Tuesday night. They were looking to build upon the momentum in their game at Riverside City College tonight. The Hawks were successful and came away with an 82-76 win for their second straight conference victory to improve to 2-0 and 9-4 overall. Both teams utilized their fastbreaking, uptempo style throughout the game, but the Hawks outlasted the Tigers to secure the win.
The Hawks and Tigers battled back and forth for the first ten minutes of the first half, but SCC went on a 10-2 run late and held their largest lead of the half at 10 points with 1:59 left. Santiago Canyon led at intermission by the score of 43-34. The Hawks' sophomore guard, Aaron Wadman, was stellar throughout the half. He scored 24 points on 8 for 10 shooting, including 3 for 4 from the three-point line. He also grabbed 5 rebounds to lead SCC. Zach Ibbetson chipped in with 8 points in the half including two 3-pointers. Santiago Canyon held Riverside City to 40% from the field in the first half.
SCC started the second half strong and built a comfortable lead. With 11:14 remaining in the game, the Hawks were up by 19 points. RCC battled back and were able to cut into the lead, but never got close enough to take the lead. Santiago Canyon finished the game by making free throws to secure the win by the score of 82-76. Wadman finished with a career high of 41 points and 12 rebounds. The 41 points is the second most in a single game in Santiago Canyon's history. The record is held by Rocket Henderson who scored 44 points on January 5, 2018 against Copper Mountain College. Ibbetson finished with 11 points, while Harrison Wiese added 9 and Adam Holod scored 8 points. Wadman led the team with 5 assists to cap off his impressive night.
The Hawks will have a few days off for the holidays and will be back in action on December 30th. They will play at Cerritos College with a 7pm tip-off. The game is the last of their non-conference schedule. They will resume conference play on Wednesday, January 4th (at Santa Ana) and on Friday, January 6th (home vs. Fullerton).
