Hawks Power Past Comets in High Flying Affair
A combined 42 three pointers were taken by both the Santiago Canyon College Hawks and the Palomar College Comets on Friday night as the two teams battled in the final non-conference contest of the season. Despite the Comets leading the way from beyond the arc, it was the Hawks who prevailed as they were one point shy of touching the century mark.
The Hawks nearly matched their season-best shooting mark by carting an impressive 52.1 mark from the floor. They were just two tenths shy of repeating their season high clip which came in their season opening win against Glendale in early November.
Included in the stellar shooting percentage was an impressive and very clutch 40.7 percent three point clip that aided the Hawks to a 99-92 victory. Furthermore, a strong defensive effort supported their offensive prowess as they forced the Comets to cough the rock up 14 times to while converting them to 24 points.
The Hawks took care of the ball throughout the entire game by committing a mere eight turnovers. This was crucial as the back-and-forth affair saw six tied scores and eight lead changes.
Pacing the pack was freshman guard Kai Smith who bagged his sixth 20+ point game for the third-straight night. He finished with 22 points in 38 minutes of action.
Three more starters inked a double-digit total with freshman guard Toney Colley following with 17 points. It was his third time in the last four games he landed in double digit scoring. A 3-for-6 mark from downtown aided his performance.
Freshman guard Damien Parker pocketed 16 points to go along with four assists, while freshman center Chico Lopez finished with 14 points that included a pair of triples.
Sophomore guard Isaiah Arthurton dropped seven points in a supporting role and displayed some incredible vision leading to five assists. Freshman guard Eli Arthurton chipped in 11 points to lead the bench brigade.
