Bio

Tom McCanna is embarking on his 25th year of coaching and this will be his 3rd at Santiago Canyon College. Prior to SCC, Coach McCanna served as El Toro's Boys Assistant Varsity coach for 8 years(4 years as Head Junior Varsity Coach). In that time El Toro won 2 South Coast league titles and made a trip to the CIF-SS Finals in 2013. Prior to El Toro, Coach McCanna assisted the Marina Boys Varsity from 1996-1999 & 2002-2008 where he helped the Vikings to the CIF-SS Finals in 2003.

Between his stints at Marina, Coach McCanna moved back to Milwaukee, WI to coach at his alma mater, Cardinal Stritch University in Milwaukee, WI.  In his time at Cardinal Stritch, Coach McCanna helped the Wolves reach the NAIA National Tournament in 2000 as well as winning 2 Chicagoland Athletic Conference championships. Coach McCanna has also spent several summers (2010-2015) working at the John Beilein Player Development Camps @ the University of Michigan.

As a player, Coach McCanna started his basketball career at Santa Margarita Catholic High School. Coach McCanna, a member of the Charter Class at SMCHS (1991) was a 3 year Varsity Captain and his teams made it to the CIF-SS Quarterfinals in 1990 and the CIF-SS Semifinals in 1991. Coach McCanna played his college ball at Cardinal Stritch University in Milwaukee, WI.  During his playing days at Stritch, Coach McCanna's team won the 1994 Lake Michigan Conference Championship. His final 2 years at Stritch Coach McCanna was the recipient of the Sixth Man Award in 1995 & 1996.

Coach McCanna is a Special Education teacher and works at Valley Vista High School in Fountain Valley. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Public Communications from Cardinal Stritch in 1996 and completed his Masters of Arts in Education in 2008. He currently resides in Rancho Santa Margarita with his wife Christine who does Presto Live stats at all of SCC’s home games.
