Hawks Drop Two in Saturday Doubleheader
The Santiago Canyon College softball team finished out a busy weekend with a double header on Saturday that featured contests against the San Mateo College Bulldogs and the Mt. San Antonio College Mounties. After beginning their season with a win against Bakersfield, the Hawks took a slide by dropping two contest.
San Mateo vs. Santiago Canyon, 6-1
The Hawks struggled to get any offense churning after recording a scattered four hits leading to one run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Freshman shortstop Millie Maher led the final inning off with a single to right field and promptly advanced to third base after two-consecutive ground outs. Freshman third baseman Kiana Bell drove in Maher with a single to the shortstop to etch their only run of the game.
Sophomore left fielder Alyssa Patlan recorded the first hit of the game for the Hawks in the bottom of the fourth inning on an infield single to third base. She followed with another single to left field in the bottom of the sixth inning to lead the offense.
Sophomore starting pitcher Madison Lee (1-1) was tagged for six runs on eight hits in seven innings of action. She fanned three in the process, but allowed a two-run round tripper.
Mt. San Antonio vs. Santiago Canyon, 6-5
The Hawks jumped out to an early 5-0 lead after three frames with a big first inning that plated three runs.
Lee, who started her third-consecutive game in the circle, blanked the Mounties in the top of the frame and the Hawks offensive went to work. Patlan stayed hot at the dish by barreling a single to right field and advanced to second on a passed ball. Consecutive walks drawn from sophomore center fielder Haley Perez and freshman catcher Tasneem Kerdiva loaded the bases to set up an RBI situation for freshman designated player Isabella Altamirano. She came through with a single up the middle to score the game's first run.
Sophomore second baseman Selena Salcido followed by drawing the inning's third walk to score Perez, while freshman right fielder Yasmine Garcia drove a single to left field to plate T. Kerdiva bringing the score to 3-0 in the Hawk's favor.
After a quick bottom of the second inning, the Hawks added two more runs in the third inning starting with an RBI base knock from Garcia to plate Altamirano who reached on a single to center field. Freshman shortstop Millie Maher uncorked a single to center to score Salcido to give the Hawks a 5-0 lead.
However, the Hawks' bats went cold the following two frames while the Mountie's sticks heated up. Lee (1-2) went on to allow six runs in the final three frames en route to a 6-5 defeat.
The Hawks threatened in the bottom of the seventh inning with a leadoff single from Altamirano, but an inning ending double play axed a comeback opportunity.
Altamirano went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Salcido and Garcia each penciled a 2-for-3 day at the dish.
