Softball Handles Grossmont in Six Innings
It only took six innings to decide a winner on Wednesday afternoon as the Santiago Canyon College softball squad hosted the Grossmont College Griffins for the team's home opener. The Hawks barreled 12 hits while pushing across nine runs leading to a 9-1 mercy rule victory.
The Hawks wasted no time as they etched their first two runs on the board in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore center fielder Alyssa Patlan led off the frame with a bunt single and promptly swiped second base to put her in scoring position. Freshman designated player Isabella Altamirano plated her two batters later on a single through the left side. Freshman right fielder Tasneem Kerdiva, who reach base via walk with one out in the inning, scored on a bases juiced walk drawn by freshman third baseman Yasmine Garcia to hand the Hawks a 2-0 advantage.
T. Kerdiva continued the scoring trend in the following frame by drawing the team's second bases-loaded free pass to score freshman first baseman Kianna Bell who reached on a single through the left side. Freshman pinch runner Calysta Maciel and freshman shortstop Millie Maher scored on an error from Grossmont's first baseman in the bottom of the fourth inning to pad the Hawks lead at 5-1.
Patlan continued to cart a hot bat by driving in a run in the bottom of the fifth inning on a screaming line drive that Grossmont's second baseman could not handle. Garcia scored on the play after leading off the inning with a single to right field.
SCC sealed the deal in the bottom of the sixth inning after Maciel led off the frame with a single through the left side. She came around to score on a double in the left center gap complients of sophomore catcher Raneem Kerdiya. Garcia plated R. Keridya with a triple to right center, backed by a sacrifice flyout from freshman pinch hitter Kaitlin Murphy leading to a 9-1 victory.
Freshman hurler Nadeen Kerdiya (1-0) earned the start in the circle and went the distance after scattering five hits and fanning three batters. She nearly retired the side in the first, third and fifth innings.
Patlan and Garcia each barreled three knocks. Garcia drove in two and scored twice, while Patlan drove in one run and scored once. Patlan had two stolen bases, while Maher and Macie eached swiped one bag.
Bell went 2-for-3 with a run scored, while K. Kerdiya and Garcia each had the Hawks two extra base hits.
