Softball Swept by Orange Coast
The Santiago Canyon College softball program capped its opening Orange Empire Conference (OEC) series on Friday afternoon against the Orange Coast College Pirates on the road. The Hawks etched two late game runs, but just four hits proved unworthy of a win as they fell 9-2.
After suffering a mercy rule defeat the game prior, the Hawks struggled to gain any offensive momentum. Their first run came in the top of the fifth inning after they placed runners on second and third with one out. Freshman first baseman Kiana Bell, who reached via walk, came home on a sacrifice fly out to right field off the bat of freshman center fielder Haley Perez.
The Hawk's second run came in the top of the sixth inning. Freshman left fielder Alyssa Patlan led the inning off by drawing a free pass, stealing second base and advancing to third base on a passed ball. She would later touch home after freshman second baseman Calysta Maciel barreled a double in the right-center gap.
However, the scoring would stop there.
Freshman hurler Madison Lee (4-9) earned the loss in the circle after allowing nine runs on 11 hits which included a round tripper. Three of the nine runs were unearned due to two defensive miscues.
Freshman third baseman Yasmine Garcia, freshman right fielder Tasneem Kerdiya, Perez and Maciel were the lone players to notch a hit. Collectively, the offense went 4-for-23 at the dish.
