Hawks Blanked in Series Opener
The Santiago Canyon College softball squad hosted the defending state champion Cypress College Chargers on Tuesday for the first game of a three-game series in Orange Empire Conference (OEC) action. The Hawks were bested by the Chargers after failing to score leading to a 5-0 defeat.
The Hawks stranded eight runners on base throughout the contest making it difficult to gain any offensive ground. They were held to a mere four hits as well.
Sophomore hurler Madison Lee took to the mound for her fifth-consecutive start and held the Chargers at bay throughout the first four frames. She allowed just one run on one hit, but a two-run shot off the bat of the Charger's second baseman in the top of the fifth inning distanced themselves from the lead.
Lee (7-12) fanned three batters, but issued six walks, allowed nine hits and was tabbed with the loss.
Offensively, freshman second baseman Millie Maher reached in all three at bats featuring a pair of free passes and a single. She swiped two bases bringing her season total to 13. She currently ranks second in the conference.
Sophomore center fielder Alyssa Patlan barreled a single, drew a walk and swiped a bag for her 11th of the season. She sits two behind Maher and ranks third in the conference in stolen bases.
Freshman right fielder Calysta Maciel and freshman Yasmine Garcia both barreled a hit to round out the offensive highlights.
