Softball Defeated in Extras
The Santiago Canyon College softball team hosted the Pasadena City College Lancers in a re-scheduled non-conference game on Wednesday afternoon in the midst of a three-game series with Fullerton. Despite owning a two-run lead entering the top of the seventh inning, the Hawks allowed three runs in the top of the seventh inning to force a do or die situation.
With the Hawks down by one run entering into the final frame, sophomore catcher Raneem Kerdiya stepped up to the dish to lead off the inning. She came through in the clutch by taking a 1-1 pitch and driving it deep over the left field wall for a solo jack that tied up the game at four all with nobody out.
The Hawks weren't done as freshman designated player Isabella Altamirano singled up the middle, followed by a walk by freshman first baseman Kaitlin Murphy. Freshman left fielder Tasneem Kerdiya advanced the runners on a groundout to second base setting the stage for a walk off win. However, the Hawks could not produce thus sending the game into extra innings.
Neither team scored in the eighth inning, but the Lancers were able to etch a run across the board in the top of the ninth inning compliments of a passed ball.
R. Kerdiaya came up to kick off the bottom of the ninth inning and nearly tied the game with one swing once again, but it fell into the glove of the center fielder at the warning track. Two quick outs to follow sealed a 5-4 loss for the Hawks.
Freshman hurler Nadeen Kerdiya took to the slab and pitched seven innings of solid ball. She allowed four runs on nine hits leading to three strikeouts. Freshman Madison Lee (8-18) relieved her in the eighth inning and was tabbed with the loss after allowing one run on two hits. The one run credited to her name was unearned.
The top five hitters in the Hawks' batting order barreled one hit each highlighted by R. Kerdiya's solo shot in the seventh inning. Freshman shortstop Millie Maher and sophomore center fielder Alyssa Patlan each recorded a hit, walk, and stolen base.
Freshman right fielder Calysta Maciel went 1-for-3 with a triple, sacrifice fly, a run scored and an RBI. Murphy went 1-for-3 with a single and run scored.
