The climax to the chase for the Orange Empire Conference title between Santiago Canyon, Cypress and Saddleback played out on Tuesday afternoon in the final week of league play. Going in to the game, a win for the Hawks in their final two games of the season would see them win the championship out-right. A tie and win for the Hawks, with Saddleback also winning out, would see them become Co-Champions with Saddleback. A defeat, with Cypress and Saddleback winning out, would see those schools declared Co-Champions.
Some uncharacteristic errors set the Hawks up for a difficult afternoon. The Chargers opened the scoring when a miss-hit cross found it's way under the cross-bar and in to the far-side netting on 4 minutes. SCC responded almost immediately with Summer Stewart hitting inches over the bar, and then Alyssa Rubio having a Stewart cross turned away from close range. SCC were beginning to assert themselves more and more, when the Chargers scored again, this time with an own-goal from a corner.
Santiago Canyon adjusted at half-time and came-out in full-force in the second period. Despite Cassie Lewis and Camryn Toole finding success down the flanks, SCC couldn't turn the constant pressure in to goals. Savanna Prado was called upon to make one fine second-half stop for the Hawks as Cypress held-on for the win.
Next up for the Hawks is the final game of league play away at Golden West College on Friday, November 12th. Kick-off is at 3pm.
Thanks to all the travelling contingent who came out to cheer on the team.
