In some fierce heat, SCC battled San Joaquin Delta from Northern California to a 2-1 victory. Both teams had spells of pressure in the first period, but neither were able to find the opening goal.
It was the visiting Mustangs who got on the board 8 minutes in to the second half, with a fine header from a poorly defended set-piece. SCC almost responded immediately with Camryn Toole lifting the ball over the bar with just the keeper to beat. Nikki Marino put the Hawks back on level terms minutes later after some smart flank-play. Toole's serve was only partially cleared for Marino to collect and strike across the keeper and in off the far post.
Both teams continued to push for the winner, but the decider came minutes from time when Marlene Ruiz sent Cassie Lewis through on goal. As the keeper saved, Alyssa Rubio (pictured) followed up to guide the ball into the back of the net.
Thanks go out to all those who braved the heat to cheer on the Hawks today.
Next-up is an away contest at Moorpark college on Friday, September 9th. Kick-off is at 2pm.
