Jordan 'Little' Salinas grabbed the headlines with a game-winning header in the dying embers of a competitive contest to record a 2-1 victory for the Hawks over the visiting Moorpark Raiders.
The opening period saw both teams trying to adjust to the heat and humidity. SCC struck first when Samantha Aguila climbed the highest to head home an Aubrey Bryant serve around the 15 minute mark. The Hawks dominated possession for long periods against the resilient visitors but went into the break leading by the solitary goal.
Santiago Canyon dominated the second half but couldn't turn their possession in to clear cut goal-scoring opportunities. Marlene Ruiz had a shot turned away from close range but the precision in the final third was lacking.
Ultimately, the Hawks were punished for their profligacy with two minutes to go on the clock. A speculative long range effort reached beyond the fingertips of Hawks Keeper Krystal Maxey to level the scores.
Undeterred, the Hawks kicked on. A shot from Sheila Sanchez was deflected for a corner and then the on-rushing Salinas crashed the ball home to secure the win.
Thanks go out to all the SCC fans in attendance today including alumni Caroline and Jocko Hanna, as well as long-time coaches Lisa Hermen and Chris Woolley.
Next up for the Hawks is another home contest against LA Harbor College on Friday, September 15th at 3pm.
