The Santiago Canyon College women's soccer team fired off nine shots in a non-conference showdown against the MiraCosta College Spartans on Wednesday afternoon. Of those nine shots, it was the foot of sophomore Sloane De Torres that struck gold as she scored the lone goal leading to a 1-0 win.
De Torres, who scored three goals in her first season with Santiago Canyon, has only tried her foot four times this season with three of her tries landing on target. She burried her first goal of the season in the 49th minute off a pass from sophomore Alyssa Marino to seal the victory.
De Torres fired off two shots on the day with sophomore Gigi Bruno and sophomore Alyssa Marino pacing the team with three shots each. Sophomore Samantha Aguilar had the other attempt that landed on target off a strong strike, but was deflected by the Spartan's outstretch goalkeeper.
SCC held MiraCosta to eight shots on goal due in part to a strong defensive brigade featuring sophomore Brisa Mariscal, sophomore Madison Stottlemyer and freshman Karen Pedraza.
Sophomore goalkeeper Grayton Normand (2-1-0) was flawless between the pipes with four saves; two of which were recorded in the final 10 minutes of the contest. She earned her second win of the season.
