Under first-year Head Coach Shawn Patchell, the Santiago Canyon College women's volleyball team hit the court on Friday and competed in the Mt. San Jacinto Tri-Tournament. The Hawks opened up with a match against the host Eagles, followed by a showdown against the Palomar College Comets.
The Hawks dropped both contests by the final score of 3-0, but displayed signs of life with a new-look squad. Freshman outside hitter Chelsea Riedel experienced the most offensive success by hammering home 10 kills in each match. She chipped in three digs over the two matches and led her team with 21 points.
Freshman setter Peyton Speakman handled the offensive rhythm leading to 31 assists over the course of two matches. She clocked in 19 assists in the opener against MSJC. She also rose up for two block assists and notched four digs in the same match.
Sophomore outside hitter Nicole Rodrigues had an even 10 kills in the combined two matches highlighted by a six-kill effort against MJSC. She recorded nine digs in the six sets she played. Furthermore, she led her squad on the back line in both games.
Freshman libero Imari McGhee earned three digs over the course of the tournament, while lofting over one kill in the match against Palomar.
The Hawks (0-2) will continue action on Friday, September 15 as they begin Orange Empire Conference (OEC) play against the Cypress College Chargers on the road at 6 p.m.
