Hawks Capture First Set, Drop Following Three Against Santa Ana
The Santiago Canyon College women's volleyball team hosted the Santa Ana College Dons in Orange Empire Conference (OEC) action on Wednesday night in their home gym. After sweeping Fullerton last Friday, the Hawks took the first set tonight, 25-12, to make it four-set wins in a row. However, the following three sets did not favor them as they ultimately fell victim to the Dons in four sets.
Freshman setter Peyton Speakman was the story of tonight's contest as she set a career-high mark in assists with 37. She fed five different players with each recording at least two kills. Furthermore, she was money on the service line leading to four aces. Speakman also did some dirty work on the backline despite being out of rotation leading to a career-high 11 digs.
The biggest beneficiary of Speakman's assists was freshman outside hitter Chelsea Riedel. The Orange County local hammered home 20 or more kills for the second-consecutive match. Tonight, she ended with an even 20 kills on 45 attempts to boast an impressive .356 hitting percentage. Furthermore, she manned the backline leading to a team-high 13 digs.
Freshman outside hitter Sophie Ziglinski surpassed the double-digit kill mark for the first time in her career. She foudn the hardwood 11 times on 41 swings leading to ahitting percentage just under .200. She added 13 digs and a service ace as well.
Freshman outside hitter Sarah Violett had a strong game leading to five kills and a pair of aces, while freshman outside Haileigh Psachall notched a trio of kills. Sophomore outside hitter Nicole Rodrigues notched four digs to go along with two kills, while freshman defensive specialist Daj Lowe came off the bench for four digs.
Freshman Gabrielle Handfield saw time in the third set, but it only led to a service error.
